This book has been designed to provide a range of workplace scenarios that can be utilised for experiential learning covering difficult conversations, negotiation and mediation. The scenarios provide learners with the opportunity to engage in different role-plays and provide learners with the opportunity to reflect on their experience with reflective questions.

Mathematical Reasoning and Investigation is designed to help you develop the ability to use mathematics to solve the kinds of problems that don't come with answers in the back of the book. We like to think of it as a mathematics book for people who think they're not good at mathematics. The work will be useful for anyone wanting to develop their own skills in reasoning and problem solving using mathematics, and for teachers and preservice teachers hoping to help their students to develop these same skills.

A significant challenge for neurodivergent students is the transition to studying in a new environment. This book focuses on assisting students with this transition by guiding them through different learning activities and information to support the team-based learning they will engage in during their degree. The resources in this book are designed to be accessible for all students and staff, with the aim of developing an understanding of disability and neurodiversity, teamwork and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with peers to achieve common goals. The resources shared here can be utilised within individual units to support student skill development in inclusivity, engagement with others and the capacity to contribute towards highly functional teams.

Most learning and teaching activities that get created in initial teacher education courses never get seen again once they are assessed as part of an assignment. However, pre-service History teachers undertaking a Master of Teaching at Deakin University have created and shared some of the learning and teaching activities they designed as part of a renewable assignment. This Open Education Resource (OER) contains activities on ancient history, empires, twentieth century world history and even early twenty-first century history, with a focus on building historical thinking. It showcases their emerging content and pedagogical understanding as well as their capacity to engage with open pedagogy and design copyright compliant materials. Although the activities have been mostly designed around the curriculum requirements of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), they are easily adapted to fit other state and international curriculum contexts.

To align the teaching and learning of building measurement with current industry practices and standards in Australia, it is essential to update traditional teaching materials. Existing textbooks predominantly focus on manual measurement methods and provide limited coverage of computer-based techniques that are now widely adopted in professional practice. This handbook addresses this gap by integrating digital measurement tools, particularly RIB CostX software, which reflects contemporary industry workflows. The STEM Host Guide, developed by Dr Sophie McKenzie and Associate Professor Karen Young at Deakin University (SEBE), is a novel digital resource designed to enhance the supervision of STEM students in placement-based Work Integrated Learning (WIL).This guide — complemented by a host video — captures the essentials of effective student supervision, including:
• Clarifying roles and expectations for hosts and students.
• Engagement strategies that balance “working to learn and learning to work.”
• Performance review criteria with structured goal setting, constructive feedback loops, and formal mid/end placement discussions.
• Evaluation tools such as a grid map with three domains: discipline specific STEM knowledge, ethical/professional obligations, and employability skills (communication, critical thinking, collaboration, self management).
• Rating scales that track progression from early learning to independent, forward thinking practice.
While this guide is primarily intended for hosts, we also see its usefulness for students — by explaining how performance is evaluated and how to meaningfully engage with supervisors — and for academic staff, who can draw on its tested framework and adaptable tools to align placement activities with STEM curricula.
By combining flexibility with tested supervision practices, the STEM Host Guide empowers educators, industry partners, and students to co create meaningful, personalised placement experiences that foster professional growth and work readiness across diverse STEM contexts.
