Introduction

The STEM Host Guide

Supporting industry/community supervisory responsibilities for student placements.

The digital resource offers insights on the management of quality work placement supervision [1] . [2]. The guide is written for hosts, however, it is likely to also be useful for placement students and teaching teams.

It is designed to be prescriptive, without being exhaustive. It provides suggestions for determining how you might opt to lead and support your student’s professional learning and development during their placement as they learn in the workplace.

It provides an overview of how your hosting role intersects with the performance review process (see placement performance framework section). The framework sets out the ‘what’ and the ‘how to’ of placement planning, expectation setting, performance monitoring and reporting.

All resources are downloadable and designed to be translated:

  • to your workplace context;
  • the student’s unique learning journey; and
  • to be respectful of your unique mentorship/management/leadership style in guiding learning.

Key Takeaways

We encourage you to utilise the downloadable documents so that you can tailor the placement and learning requirements as appropriate, to the many and varied aspects of quality placement supervision that optimise student engagement in workplace learning. This is particularly important given that not all STEM placements are created equally.
