45 What is Ocean Equity
Ocean equity refers to the fair and just distribution of the benefits, responsibilities, risks, and decision-making power associated with the ocean and its resources. It requires us to recognising that while oceans support livelihoods, food security, culture, and climate regulation, not all people benefit equally, and some communities, particularly Indigenous peoples, small-scale fishers, coastal and island communities, and even future generations, often have disproportionate environmental and economic costs.
